He cries often, for the world, for his family, for justice, because he loves so hard. Loving and supporting him through this is his grandmother, his grandmother’s live-in best friend, Paul, and his beloved Janice. Though he experiences incredible trauma, Claude is also just an awkward, introverted teenager trying to figure his life out through ridiculous and difficult circumstances. At another, he’s thrown into a wrestling circle simply for attending a party. At one point, Claude is summoned at 3 am to help Paul attack a former flame’s new lover with a wooden staff. And though it is heartbreaking and heavy in its realism, Everywhere You Don’t Belong is also funny and ridiculous. He dreams of escaping the police brutality and racism of Chicago, only to encounter the same injustices in Missouri.
